We're facing a tough time in the world of music but hope is NOT lost. Yeah, the shoe-gazers (as one local, long-time original rocker calls them) are the popular "IN" thing at the moment in the Chippewa Valley. But Rock isn't dead. It's merely considering its options.
Face it, we lived through Disco. We lived through mood-rings and Pet Rocks.
One local band who has weighed those options and is currently cranking out great music is FM Down. The Eau Claire based rockers have been peppering the Midwest with their unique brand of rock & roll since 2010.
With a catalog of three albums to date, their fourth, titled Maybe We Could Get Somewhere If We Could Just Be Somewhere Else is due out on November 23.
Their debut offering from the album is a song called "Bad Design." It features a voice some of you may know, Sarah Spindler. She was the voice of long-time cover band The Pheromones.
Rock & Roll is a "basics" genre and the best songs leave an imprint on listeners for years. It doesn't need over the top production, the latest plugins or the current 'who's who' of celebs as collaborators. Rock & Roll isn't about the musician, it's about the song. Bands like Boston & Journey have songs that will live on for decades after the musicians have departed.
You never saw Brad Delp grabbing his crotch but you know songs like "More Than a Feeling" the minute you hear them, and can sing along. Steve Perry never got in a PR spat with another singer, but when you hear "Don't Stop Believin," you get pulled into the song.
FM Down isn't worried about street cred or a posse, they're making songs that will last.
Another of the band's memorable tracks coincided with the closing of long-time Water Street bar The House of Rock. We Called It A Scene paid tribute to many of the bands and venues that originally put Eau Claire on the musical map.
A $7 latte may give you a few minutes of immediate gratification but a well written song will last for years, even after only hearing it once.
