Latino community wins redistricting case

Posted June 18th, 2012 @ 2:12pm

Wisconsin Hispanics finally won their long battle today to keep at least one seat in the state Assembly.

State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen dropped his plans to appeal a ruling by three federal judges, which made his fellow Republicans re-draw a boundary between two Assembly districts in Milwaukee.

Van Hollen also agreed to pay $185,000 to help the Hispanic plaintiff pay its legal costs.

The original GOP map would have spread a large Milwaukee Latino community among two districts, thus making it possible that Hispanics would not be elected in either district.
